Kovalam is a very famous beach resort all over the world. Since 1930's the international tourists, especially the Europeans, frequent the Kovalam Beach. Kovalam, 10 km from the capital city Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) comprises of three small crescent beaches adjacent to each other, namely, the Lighthouse Beach, Hawa Beach and Samudra Beach. The Lighthouse Beach, the southern most beach is the place where most of the visitors spend their time. Overlooking the rocky headland is the Hawa Beach. It is the middle beach and a base for local fishers each morning. The Samudra Beach is the last beach, is least affected by the changing times. A few simple wooden fishing vessels line the beach.
